Last month podcasters, digital creators, and local business owners came together at the Women’s Business Center in Phoenix to converge and network at the second BIPOC Podcast Creators “Audio Flavor Social”.

The event was attended by both local and visiting people of color (and allies) across the gender spectrum who were excited to share stories, ideas and learn from some of Phoenix’s very own podcasting success stories like NBC Sports host, Doug Smith, community leader and entrepreneur Sonia Alejandra Saunders and independent creator, Mayra Garcia.

Audio flavor Social (Phoenix) was sponsored by Chicanos Por La Causa, Prestamos CDFI Womens Business Center and Mujeron Movement.

“We loved being part of the Audio Flavor Social with BIPOC Podcast Creators. Sharing the space with community members and talking about a new way to generate revenue for small businesses is what fuels us. It was a beautiful event and people were so engaged! We welcome the opportunity to continue to support our BIPOC small business community.” Said Laura Suarez, Program Director at The Prestamos CDFI Women’s Business Center.

It was a beautiful clear night in Phoenix, which made it easier to enjoy the venue’s open layout during sunset. Conversations flowed, and the musical talents of local artist, Keagan, definitely enhanced the mood. Attendees enjoyed some locally made Mexican appetizers, paired with refreshing wine and beer, while they mingled.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Phoenix BIPOC community for coming through and supporting the event,” said co-founder of BIPOC Podcast Creators, Maribel Quezada Smith. “It’s exciting to see how many local creators have found success in podcasting and beyond.”

Part of the BIPOC Podcast creators mission is to facilitate more spaces & opportunities for BIPOC folks to exist in effortlessly, and this event helps fuel that goal. From seasoned business owners to blooming creators, and even podcasting rookies, this Phoenix Audio Flavor Social brought together people who are helping to shape not only the future of podcasting, but the future of media.

“This being a new element for me - I really enjoyed the event and I loved the beautiful aesthetics of the venue it was hosted in, the local musician playing live music during the event and the corn vendors.” Said attendee, Karina Rodriguez.

The panelists shared tips, success stories and lessons learned along their podcasting journey. “If I hadn’t started my own podcast five years ago, I wouldn’t have gotten a call from the Executive Producer at golf Channel which put me in the broadcasting seat and frankly changed my entire career for the better.” Shared Doug Smith, with an engaged crowd.

Many of the business owners attending were pleased to discover the opportunities that lie ahead in podcasting, not just as a medium to share a message but as an alternative to advertising. Panelist and entrepreneur, Sonia Alejandra Saunders shared how her events and services have seen an uptick thanks in part to her podcast. “I know you can do a lot for your business with a consistent podcast, but definitely get yourself a producer, as soon as you can to help you raise the bar and the quality of your show.” She pointed out.

“It was super fun and welcoming. I enjoyed the environment, music, food, and the panelists.” Said attendee, Adlin Morales-Aguilu.

Overall, the evening was a success! But we couldn’t have made this all possible without the kind support of our partners, Chicanos Por La Causa, Prestamos CDFI Womens Business Center and Mujeron Movement.
